The quiet case for shoulder season

The weeks either side of high season buy you better light, better tables and better company.

What you gain

Late May and late September in the Mediterranean, October in Japan, March in the Arabian desert: the temperature drops into comfort, the light lengthens, and the people you most want to meet are no longer at full stretch.

Access improves with them. A chef, a curator, a guide or a winemaker has time for a long conversation in the shoulder weeks that would be impossible in August.

What you trade

Weather becomes less predictable, and some mountain passes, boats and seasonal kitchens close. The answer is a plan with alternatives already arranged rather than a plan that assumes sunshine.

How to choose the week

Work backwards from one fixed thing you truly care about: a harvest, a festival, a migration, a race weekend. Build the rest of the journey around it, and let the average temperature be a secondary consideration.
