Travelling well at altitude

The Andes, the Himalaya and the high Alps ask for patience in the first two days. Give it to them.

Sleep low, climb slowly

Arriving in Cusco or Paro and moving immediately upward is the most common mistake. Two nights at a lower elevation before the highest point of the journey transforms how the whole trip feels.

Where the geography allows, we route the first days downhill from the airport rather than up, which is why a Peruvian journey often begins in the Sacred Valley rather than the city above it.

Small habits, large difference

Drink far more water than feels necessary, eat lightly, skip alcohol on the first evening, and treat the first walk as a stroll. Speak to your doctor about preventative medication well before departure.

Build slack into the plan

One unhurried morning in the first three days is not a wasted morning. It is the insurance that protects the trek, the ceremony or the summit you came for.
