Rome, history behind closed doors

Four nights devoted to a Rome ordinarily kept out of sight: descending beneath the Colosseum after dark, opening the Vatican with its Sacred Keyholder, and standing alone in the Sistine Chapel. Beyond the city, Subiaco's Holy Cave is revealed by the Head of the Benedictine Order, before a return to private galleries and an evening hosted by an Italian Duchess.

Defining moments

  • The Colosseum after dark, descending into its underground chambers
  • Opening the Vatican Museums with the Sacred Keyholder before the public arrives
  • The Sistine Chapel alone, away from the crowds
  • The Holy Cave of Subiaco, guided by the Head of the Benedictine Order
  • Galleria Doria Pamphilj in private, within one of Rome's great aristocratic residences
  • Dinner hosted by an Italian Duchess in a private palazzo
